Much delayed Leg week

Okey! So finally scrapped together enough stuff to qualify a post.

Leg week, and all its muscles, strangely I find it easier compared to arm week. I think it is because I haven’t draw that many arms???

Okeys this was a gif, but somehow tumblr won’t let me upload it. Head over to my sketchbook on CGHUB to see!

Now for more drawings of trying to understand forms and think in 3D space.

AND finally, while I was doing another painted study, the awesome moment when things CLICK together, and you understand something HAPPENED.

It may not look like much, it just looks like any other attempted stab at copying photos, but to me, I understood the difference between a DRAWING and a PAINTING.

You may have no idea what I’m rambling on about, a drawing is a drawing, a painting is a painting, DUH. All the other pictures I’ve uploaded in this post are drawings, and this last one is a painting.

OBVIOUSLY, so what am I going about?

Last post, I did some “painted” studies, and they all came out looking weird, even when I had the picture RIGHT next the study, it came out weird. Did I not understand values/tones? Why was it that I could not render the forms/planes.

I thought I was understanding values better, did I not do many DRAWING studies? and they made sense. I could indicate the planes, and express kind of where things were. So why can’t I PAINT it?

Fundamental question here is what is a DRAWING, and what is a PAINTING.

Drawing - picture using lines to depict contours. We shading with usually limited values. Usually BLACK, grey in the middle, and leaving the white of the paper as the highlight.

Painting - using values to suggest the contour, because lines don’t exist in the real world. (NOT filling in values like you colour a line drawing)

We are all use to drawings, and I tried to apply the same way of depicting values in painting. What happened usually was, the values were TOO dark, or TOO light. I couldn’t just use black for shadows, and some sort of grey for the mid tones, and leave the page white. It is a different way of thinking when you are trying to “paint” something. It is about the relationship between the values. The shadows cannot just be a dark almost black value, it may look nice in a drawing, with dramatic contrast, but in painting, it really should be saved for the cast shadows. (lol which is NOT the same thing as a shadow)

I would suggest people to go read Andrew Loomis books, he does explain this better than I do.

Give it a go, and hopefully, what I’ve rambled about makes some sense afterwards.

Temporary working.

I am currently working on a project. Only on for short term (2 weeks) it has, taken over some of my days. Unfortunately I won’t have cool drawings, or ANYTHING useful to show for my efforts.

The bunch of guys I’m working with/for hired out a place that we could meet and work, like a studio I guess. Well the place is a studio, and we’ve just take up this one corner.

I do prefer to work at home, it’s weird because I did want to get into a “studio” environment, but I do prefer my workstation at home.

So at “work” I actually have a cintiq to work on! But for what I’m doing, it’s pretty much just another screen.

Interestingly, in the bathroom, the light is actually redish orange, but decorated with some past work they’ve been involved in.

Well, this is where I head into work when ever it is required.

N/B I don’t work for the studio, like I’ve said before, we’ve just taken up a corner inside.

Well that’s a change! No spamming of pictures.

To continue with this, here are some pictures from the drawfest meet!

It started out really foggy.

But then cleared up, and there was AWESOME trees on the grounds behind.

The last tree is now my favourite tree, PERIOD. You can climb inside, and it’s kind of flat, so it’s like a room!

Well that was different! Be warned the next update will contain actual drawings.

Arm week end

Okeys, scrapping together something to post.

Finding it rather hard to go from line drawings, to tones. Can’t really depict forms in tones… >_< I don’t know why I can’t translate it from line drawings to paintings…

So did some work on values and using them to depict the forms instead of lines.

And my metal teapot which I’ve started studying, laid down the basic colours, so now it’s fixing the perspective issues I didn’t address when I was slapping down colour :/

That is all … well there is actually more sketchbook scribbles, but I haven’t gotten around to taking pictures of them (scanner … would not turn on for some reason)

Next week is… Pelvis and legs, I think. Can ALMOST draw the entire body now!

Arm week! kind of…

This (WOAH just notice the new posting layout complete with twitter and facebook icons?!) Anyways, arm WEEK!

Well yea, not really. I started working on some stuff for some one else, and while I can FINALLY say I’m getting some sort of income from this, its taking up my study time :( I have 2 schedules, one for full day studying, and one adjusted for when I have client work, but… I needed to get things done, so no real study done this week… or next week it seem.

What I have done

Some basic anatomy studies of the arm.

and then it’s really all down hill from here.

some sketches from the bus, some more drawings of arm, colour coded muscles!

Ah… yea :/ I’ve been eyeing the metal teapot that’s been waiting for me to draw it for 4 days now. Haven’t gotten around to it. Might try so tonight, but should really get my anatomy studies back on track.

AND there’s actual images I should do… you know, illustrations kinda of pictures. Someday! Should stop writing and get back to drawing.

Oh and I’ll be attending an Auckland Drawfest meetup this Saturday 26th May. 10:00am-1:00pm. So if you are in Auckland NZ, and likes to draw, CHECK IT OUT!

ps. Also added comments (looks… not so nice) But I can FINALLY kind of reply to comments/notes :D
